Questions Families Ask
What classical Christian education is, how our classrooms work, and the everyday details families want to know before they visit.
What Is Classical Education?
Classical education is the way most of the Western world educated its children for centuries. It is built on a simple idea: children learn differently at different ages, and good teaching works with those stages instead of against them.
In the elementary years, children love to memorize. They soak up songs, chants, rhymes, and facts, and they are proud of what they know. A classical school fills those years with rich, real content, so that later, when children naturally start asking why, they have something solid to think with.
At Calvary Christian Academy, all of it is anchored in God's Word. Scripture is not one subject among many. It is the lens for every subject, and the goal is not only a well educated child but a faithful one.
-
Children reciting Scripture and poetry together in the morning, reading real books rather than excerpts, learning grammar and handwriting carefully, and hearing history as a story. It is structured and joyful at the same time.
-
A typical school often moves quickly across many topics. A classical school goes deeper into fewer things and returns to them over the years, building each time on what the child already knows. It also cares about who a child is becoming, not only what they can produce on a test.
-
It means we want children who can reason, ask good questions, and weigh ideas against the truth of Scripture, not children who can only repeat answers. That begins in the early years with a strong foundation of knowledge and careful habits of reading, writing, and speaking.
-
Everywhere. Students study the Bible daily, attend weekly chapel, and memorize Scripture. History is taught as God's story unfolding, and science as the study of His creation. We also teach virtue through the CORD Honor Code: courage, obedience, respect, and diligence, each tied to Scripture.
-
Latin gives children the roots of a large share of English vocabulary, sharpens their grasp of grammar, and trains careful attention. At CCA, Latin is grouped by ability rather than grade, so each child works at the level that fits.
-
CCA has four classrooms: Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, and 5th and 6th. Bible, history, and science run on a two year cycle that the whole classroom shares. Math runs at each child's grade level, and reading and language arts run at true grade level with reading groups placed by ability.
-
Families come to us from both, at every grade. Part of admissions is a short assessment so we know where your child is, and reading groups are placed by ability, so a child is met where they are. If you are unsure, ask us on a tour. We are glad to talk it through.
