Study Hall is a place for homeschooled seventh through twelfth graders to do their own coursework on our campus, alongside other students, with adults on site to keep the day on track.

Families keep the curriculum and the flexibility they already have. Students get a quiet room, a steady schedule, and people their own age in the seat next to them. It starts Monday, August 31, and runs Monday through Thursday, nine in the morning to two in the afternoon.

How it works

Students bring their own coursework
Whatever program your family already uses, online school, a boxed curriculum, a co op, or your own plan, that is what gets done here.
An adult is in the room the whole time
The job is to keep the room quiet, keep students moving through their work, and be available when someone is stuck.
The day has a shape
Set start time, set breaks, set end. Most students who struggle at the kitchen table are not struggling with the material, they are struggling with the drift.
There is time to be a teenager
Breaks and lunch are together, around noon, which for a lot of homeschooled students is the part that is hardest to come by.
Parents stay the teacher of record
We do not grade, issue credit, or keep a transcript. Your student's education stays yours.

Who it is for

Study Hall is built for the homeschooling family that is happy with the curriculum and short on structure. The student who does fine when someone is nearby and stalls when no one is. The one who is ahead academically and lonely socially. The family with a parent going back to work, or a younger sibling who needs the mornings.

It is open to students in grades seven through twelve. Families do not need to attend Calvary Chapel Reno Sparks, though we do ask that families are in agreement with our statement of faith.

Why it meets at a church

Study Hall is a ministry of Calvary Chapel Reno Sparks. The adults in the room are part of this church, the day opens in prayer, and the standard for how students treat each other comes from Scripture rather than from a handbook.

On Wednesday mornings at 9:30 students join Calvary Christian Academy for chapel. We ask that families are in agreement with our statement of faith.

Study Hall and Calvary Christian Academy

They share a campus, a church, and a Wednesday morning chapel, and they are two different things. Calvary Christian Academy is a classical Christian school serving kindergarten through sixth grade, with teachers, curriculum, and grades. Study Hall serves seventh through twelfth and provides the room and the routine while your family provides the schooling.

Questions

Is Study Hall a school?

No. We do not teach classes, assign work, grade, or issue credit or a transcript. Your family stays in charge of the education and Study Hall provides the place and the routine.

What curriculum do students use?

Whatever yours already is. Online school, a purchased curriculum, a co op schedule, or something you built yourself all work here.

Who is in the room?

An experienced facilitator with more than thirty years of teaching in both public and private schools, on site the entire day. The role is to keep the room on task and be a help when a student is stuck. The teaching, the grading, and the record keeping stay with your family.

What does a student need to bring?

Their coursework, a laptop or tablet if their program needs one, a charger, and a lunch to eat with everyone around noon.

How early can we drop off?

Eight o'clock. The hour before Study Hall starts is set aside for serving around the church, helping the staff with whatever the campus needs that morning. Students who come early are there to pitch in rather than to wait around, and most of them find it is the part of the day they talk about. If nine is easier for your family, that works too.

Can we come fewer than four days?

For now seats are enrolled for the full four days, which keeps the room consistent for everyone in it. If enough families ask about a partial week we will look at it, so let us know either way.

Do we have to attend Calvary Chapel Reno Sparks?

No. Study Hall is open to any family in the area with a student in grades seven through twelve. We do ask that families are in agreement with the Calvary Chapel Reno Sparks statement of faith.
